Malik is eighteen. He is starting college. He is excited for his new adventure as a college student. He is going to live on campus, and he needs a mini fridge for his dorm room. With a mini fridge, he can store his foods and drinks and keep them for as long as he needs. Malik goes to Artemis’ Appliance Store. He finds a nice fridge for $275, and it’s exactly what he is looking for. It is expensive, but not too much for Malik’s budget. His uncles and aunts who live in other states have sent him some money as a graduation gift, so he can afford the fridge he likes. The employees at Artemis are very nice; they help Malik take his fridge to the checkout line on a dolly cart.

Cashier: Did you find everything ok?

Malik: Yes, I did. Thank you!

Cashier: Would you like a two-year warranty protection on your fridge?

Malik: Yes, please!

Cashier: That would be $35 dollars extra!

Malik: That’s fine!

Cashier: Your total is $325.

Malik knows that in the United States, consumers pay sales taxes on products they purchase, so he is not surprised about the final price.

Two days later, Malik receives a phone call from his mother; his grandmother sent him a brand-new fridge for his college dorm as a graduation gift. Malik now has two fridges for his dorm, but he doesn’t need two, so he decides to return the one he bought. Good thing he is not using it yet; he is still getting his room ready. He takes the fridge back to the store and waits in line at the customer service desk for his turn.

Customer service representative: How can I help you?

Malik: I bought this fridge two days ago, but I no longer need it.

Customer service representative: Is anything wrong with it?

Malik: No!

Customer service representative: Ok, can I have your receipt please?

Malik: Sure! Here it is.

Customer service representative: Ok, please insert the same card you used for the transaction and the $325 dollars will go back to your account within two to three business days.

Malik: Ok!

Customer service representative: Here is your receipt. Is there anything else I can help you with?

Malik: No, thank you.

Customer service representative: Ok! Have a nice day.

Malik: Thank you, you too!

Malik is happy he had kept his receipt. Now he only needs to wait for a few days for his refund and he can use the money for something else. Grandma saved him $325. He couldn’t have asked for a better graduation gift.
