The primary reason people shop is to supply their families with the things they need from groceries to cleaning supplies and pesticides. Without stores, markets, and supermarkets, life would be difficult as we would lack the minimum necessary items to survive, like food, clothing, and more. For this reason, we can say that shopping is a necessity. However, some people go shopping not only to buy things they need for their everyday living but also for pleasure. They simply enjoy shopping, meaning spending time in stores, going from one retailer to another, exploring a variety of things, from brand-name pants, dresses, and shoes to collections of perfume. For these people, shopping is a hobby.

A hobby, also known as a pastime, is an activity people do during their free time for pleasure or enjoyment. Some people shop to collect items like antiques and stamps; other people like to be the first to buy the newest items that arrive on the market, and for such people, shopping can become a problem. It is no longer a hobby but rather an addiction. They may overspend money, meaning they buy things that they don’t necessarily need and don’t use often, which wastes money they might need for other important, necessary things. They sometimes buy things with credit cards and pay high interest rates when they don’t have enough cash or money in the bank to pay for what they want.

It is important to check to see if you like going shopping more often than you need to or if this is because you like to; if you like to, why? Is it because you enjoy it and can control how much you spend? or is it because you simply can’t help it and feel like you always need to spend money? In this case, you will need to review your priorities and if necessary, ask for help, because although shopping can be fun, it can also become a serious problem.
